How is the start of Ramadan determined?
Ramadan is the ninth month of the lunar Hijri calendar, which is about 11 days shorter than the solar year, so Ramadan moves earlier every year. Traditionally it begins when the new crescent moon is sighted. We use Saudi Arabia’s official Umm al-Qura calendar; local announcements can differ by one day.

Always the next occurrence
Holiday countdowns are calculated in your browser for the next time each date comes round, so they never point to a date that has already passed. Fixed dates (Christmas, New Year, Halloween) simply roll over; moving holidays use their rules — Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday of November in the US, US Mother’s Day the second Sunday of May, and Easter is computed with the standard Western Easter formula.
Ramadan and Eid dates
Ramadan and Eid follow the Islamic lunar calendar and move about 11 days earlier each year. The countdown uses the calculated Umm al-Qura calendar; because many communities start the month after the new moon is sighted, the actual date can differ by a day.
Counting days correctly
The countdown runs to midnight at the start of the target day in your local time zone. “Days until” therefore means full days remaining; if you want to count the target day itself, add one. Daylight saving time changes are taken into account automatically by your device clock.
