Audio is analysed only in your browser; nothing from your microphone is sent anywhere or recorded.

This tool runs entirely in your browser; your data is never sent to a server.

How to use

  1. 1Choose your instrument and tuning, or Chromatic to tune any note.
  2. 2Press “Enable microphone & start” and allow microphone access.
  3. 3Play one string at a time and let it ring.
  4. 4Tighten the string if the needle shows flat, loosen it if sharp, until it reads in tune.

How the online tuner works

The tuner listens through your microphone and detects the pitch of the note with the YIN algorithm, which is robust against the strong overtones of plucked strings. It shows the nearest note, the target string for the chosen tuning and how far you are from it in cents (1/100 of a semitone). Within ±5 cents counts as in tune — differences that small are practically inaudible. Tap a string in the list to hear its reference tone if you want to tune by ear.

Tunings included

Guitar standard E2 A2 D3 G3 B3 E4 (low to high), Drop D (the low E string lowered to D2), bass E1 A1 D2 G2, ukulele G4 C4 E4 A4 (re-entrant, with the high G), violin G3 D4 A4 E5, and the Turkish bağlama/saz in bozuk and bağlama tunings. Chromatic mode recognises any note, so you can also use it for open tunings such as DADGAD or Open G, for mandolin or for checking a piano or voice.

Reference pitch (A4)

Standard concert pitch is A4 = 440 Hz. You can set the reference from 432 to 446 Hz to match a piano or a band that tunes slightly higher (many orchestras use 442–443 Hz) or to try 432 Hz tuning. All string targets shift accordingly.

Tips for accurate tuning

Tune in a quiet room, hold the phone or laptop microphone close to the sound hole or amp, and pluck one string firmly, letting it ring without touching the others. Tune up to the note: if a string is sharp, loosen it below the pitch and bring it back up, which helps it hold. New strings stretch, so check the tuning again after a few minutes of playing.

Frequently asked questions

What are the standard guitar tuning notes?

From the thickest to the thinnest string: E A D G B E (E2, A2, D3, G3, B3, E4).

Can I tune an electric guitar or bass?

Yes. Play through an amp near the microphone, or hold the microphone close to the strings. Low bass notes are detected best with a clear, sustained pluck.

Is the microphone audio recorded?

No. Sound is analysed only in your browser in real time; nothing is recorded or sent anywhere.

Why does the needle jump around?

Background noise or several strings ringing at once confuse pitch detection. Mute the other strings and pluck a single string firmly.

How do I tune to Drop D?

Select “Guitar – Drop D” and lower the low E string until it reads D. The other five strings stay in standard tuning.
