How to use
- 1Pause downloads, cloud backups and streams that would skew the result.
- 2Press the big “Start” button.
- 3Latency is measured first, then download and upload speed; the test takes about 30–60 seconds.
- 4Review ping, jitter, loaded latency, quality ratings for typical uses, and the test server (Cloudflare location), your IP and country.
Mbps vs MB/s
Internet plans are sold in megabits per second (Mbps), while download managers and browsers usually show megabytes per second (MB/s). One byte is 8 bits, so a 100 Mbps connection tops out at roughly 12.5 MB/s. Seeing “12 MB/s” on a 100 Mbps plan is therefore exactly what you should expect.
How much speed do you actually need?
HD streaming needs about 5 Mbps download, 4K about 25 Mbps per stream. For video calls, upload matters too: aim for 3–5 Mbps upload for HD calls. For online gaming, latency matters more than bandwidth: 20–40 ms ping is excellent, above 100 ms you will notice lag. Jitter should stay below 30 ms and packet loss near zero (this test does not measure packet loss). If several people stream at once, add their needs together.
Wi-Fi or cable?
Wi-Fi speed depends on distance to the router, walls, crowded channels from neighbouring networks and your device’s Wi-Fi standard. To see what your plan really delivers, test over an Ethernet cable. On Wi-Fi, prefer the 5 GHz band, place the router centrally and up high, and consider a mesh system in larger homes.
Why is the result lower than my ISP promised?
Advertised speeds are “up to” figures. Line distance on DSL, an old router or in-home wiring on fibre, and evening congestion all reduce real-world speed. This test runs against the nearest server on Cloudflare’s network, so results can differ by a few Mbps from other speed test sites. Frequently asked questions
Is this internet speed test free?
Yes, it is completely free with no sign-up or app. The test runs in your browser against Cloudflare’s global network.
What is a good ping?
Under 20 ms is excellent, 20–50 ms is good and 50–100 ms is acceptable. Above 100 ms you will feel the delay in online games and video calls.
What is loaded latency?
It is your ping measured while the connection is busy downloading or uploading. If it rises far above the idle ping (bufferbloat), games and calls stutter whenever someone downloads; SQM/QoS settings on the router can help.
How much data does a test use?
On fast connections a single test can transfer a few hundred MB. Keep that in mind on mobile data or metered plans.
Why do my results change between tests?
Other devices on your network, Wi-Fi signal, time of day and server load all affect each run. Test a few times at different hours and look at the average.
