How to use
- 1Press “Test microphone” and allow microphone access when the browser asks.
- 2Pick the right device from the list if you have more than one microphone.
- 3Speak and watch the level meter, peak value and waveform or frequency spectrum.
- 4Record a 5- or 10-second clip and play it back to hear how you sound.
What the mic test shows
Once you allow access, the tool reads your microphone with the Web Audio API and shows the current level and the peak level in dB, the sample rate and channel count the device actually delivers, and a live waveform or frequency spectrum. A status line tells you whether sound is being detected, whether there is only silence, or whether the signal is so loud it clips and distorts. If no sound shows up, check the device selector, the mute switch on your headset and the input volume in your operating system.
Record and play back
The level meter tells you the microphone picks up sound, but not how good it sounds. Record a 5- or 10-second clip and listen back to hear what people on Zoom, Teams, Discord or Google Meet hear: hiss, hum, room echo, distance from the mic or a muffled headset. You can also download the clip. The recording is made with the browser’s MediaRecorder and stays on your device.
Echo cancellation, noise suppression and gain
Browsers apply the same processing as video calls by default: echo cancellation, noise suppression and automatic gain control. Untick them to hear the raw microphone signal — useful for judging a USB or XLR microphone, or for finding out whether a pumping or “underwater” sound comes from processing rather than the hardware. Changes apply the next time the microphone starts.
Common errors and fixes
Permission denied: click the lock icon in the address bar, allow the microphone and reload. No microphone found: make sure it is plugged in and enabled in your system’s sound settings (on Windows, also check Privacy & security → Microphone; on macOS, System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone for your browser). Device in use: close apps such as Zoom, Teams or Discord that may hold the microphone. Microphone access only works on secure (HTTPS) pages.
Frequently asked questions
Is my voice recorded or uploaded?
No. Audio is analysed only in your browser. A recording is made only when you press record, it stays on your device and is never sent to a server.
Why does the mic test say no sound is detected?
The wrong input may be selected, the microphone may be muted (check any hardware mute button) or its input level in the system settings may be at zero. Pick another device from the list and try again.
What does clipping mean?
The signal is louder than the maximum the input can handle, so peaks are cut off and the sound distorts. Move the microphone further away or lower the input gain.
Can I test a headset or AirPods microphone?
Yes. Connect it first, then choose it in the device list. Bluetooth headsets often switch to a lower-quality mode while the microphone is in use, which is normal.
