Target GPA

This tool runs entirely in your browser; your data is never sent to a server.

How to use

  1. 1Choose one of 10 grading scales (US 4.0 letter grades by default; also Turkey, Germany, Spain, Russia, Saudi 5- and 4-point, percentage).
  2. 2Add a row for each course with its credit hours and grade.
  3. 3Read your weighted GPA and total credits.
  4. 4Use the target field to see what average you need in your remaining credits.

How GPA is calculated

Each letter grade has a point value — on the common US scale A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B− = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, D = 1.0 and F = 0. Multiply each course’s points by its credit hours, add these quality points together and divide by the total credits. A 4-credit A and a 2-credit C give (16 + 4) ÷ 6 = 3.33, not the 3.0 a simple average would suggest.

Scales differ between schools

Some colleges award 4.3 for an A+, others cap it at 4.0; some high schools use a weighted 5.0 scale for honors and AP classes. This calculator counts an A+ as 4.0, so results may differ slightly if your school awards 4.3 or uses a weighted scale. Pass/fail courses and withdrawals are normally left out of the GPA, so don’t add them as rows.

Reaching a target GPA

Enter the GPA you are aiming for and the credits still to come, and the calculator shows the average you need in them, with the minimum letter grade. Because your existing credits keep their weight, the more credits you have already completed, the harder it is to move your cumulative GPA — the result tells you quickly whether a target is realistic.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 3.5 GPA good?

On a 4.0 scale a 3.5 is between a B+ and an A−, which is generally considered strong. What counts as “good” depends on your program and goals.

Do credit hours matter?

Yes. Courses with more credits weigh more, so a grade in a 4-credit class moves your GPA twice as much as the same grade in a 2-credit class.

What is the difference between semester and cumulative GPA?

Semester GPA covers one term; cumulative GPA covers all graded credits so far. Add all your courses as rows to get the cumulative figure.

Can I use other grading systems?

Yes. Pick one of 10 presets: Turkey university and high school, US GPA, Germany university and school, Spain 0–10, Russia 2–5, Saudi 5-point, Gulf 4-point or percentage.
