Hijri Date Converter

See today’s Hijri date at a glance and convert any date between the Gregorian and Islamic (Hijri) calendars in both directions.

Today’s Hijri date

Gregorian → Hijri

Hijri → Gregorian

Hijri months traditionally begin with the sighting of the new crescent. Umm al-Qura is a calculated calendar, so local announcements may differ by ±1 day.

This tool runs entirely in your browser; your data is never sent to a server.

How to use

  1. 1Today’s Hijri date and weekday are shown at the top.
  2. 2Choose the direction: Gregorian → Hijri or Hijri → Gregorian.
  3. 3Enter the date; pick Umm al-Qura (default) or the tabular civil calendar.
  4. 4Read the converted date and browse the Hijri month grid with matching Gregorian dates.

How the Hijri calendar works

The Hijri (Islamic) calendar is purely lunar: 12 months of 29 or 30 days, giving a year of 354 or 355 days. Because it is about 11 days shorter than the solar year, Ramadan and the Eids move roughly 11 days earlier in the Gregorian calendar each year and cycle through all seasons in about 33 years. Year 1 AH begins with the Hijra, the Prophet’s migration from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE. The months are Muharram, Safar, Rabi al-Awwal, Rabi al-Thani, Jumada al-Ula, Jumada al-Akhirah, Rajab, Sha’ban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Dhu al-Qa’dah and Dhu al-Hijjah — shown here in Arabic and transliteration.

Umm al-Qura vs the civil (tabular) calendar

Umm al-Qura is the calculated calendar used officially in Saudi Arabia and the default here. The tabular “civil” Islamic calendar uses a fixed 30-year cycle of leap years and is common in software and historical work; the two can differ by a day. Conversions use your browser’s built-in calendar data, so nothing is sent to a server.

Why dates can differ by one day

Many communities begin a month only when the new crescent moon is actually sighted, which can happen a day earlier or later than any calculated calendar. For Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, always confirm the start date with your local mosque or religious authority — a ±1 day difference from this converter is normal.
