Speech to Text

Click the button, speak, and watch your words appear as editable text — with live interim results and spoken punctuation commands.

Say “comma”, “period”, “question mark”, “exclamation mark”, “colon”, “new line”.

Ready

Privacy: Chrome and Edge send your microphone audio to Google’s/Microsoft’s servers for recognition. This site does not record or store the audio; the transcript stays in your browser.

Speech recognition is done by your browser’s service; audio may be sent to the browser vendor’s (Google/Microsoft) servers. We store nothing.

How to use

  1. 1Choose the language you will speak, e.g. English (United States) or English (United Kingdom).
  2. 2Click “Start listening” and allow microphone access.
  3. 3Speak naturally; say “comma”, “period” or “new line” to insert punctuation.
  4. 4Click Stop, edit the transcript if needed, then copy it or download a .txt file.

How the dictation works

The tool uses the browser’s SpeechRecognition interface (part of the Web Speech API) in continuous mode with interim results: the grey italic line shows what the engine is still guessing, and each finalized phrase is appended to the transcript box, which you can edit at any time. If the engine stops after a pause, it is restarted automatically until you press Stop. A live word count is shown under the box. 26 languages and regional variants are available, including US and UK English, Spanish (Spain, Mexico, US), French, German, Portuguese (Brazil, Portugal), Hindi, Japanese and Chinese.

Spoken punctuation

With “Punctuation commands” on, English dictation turns the words “comma”, “period” or “full stop”, “question mark”, “exclamation mark” or “exclamation point”, “colon” and “new line” into the matching characters. Commands also work in Turkish, German, Spanish, Arabic and Russian. Turn the option off when you need those words written out — for example when dictating about a “period” of time.

Browser support and privacy

Speech recognition works in Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge on desktop and Android. Firefox does not support it and Safari’s support is partial, so the tool shows a clear message if your browser lacks it. Important: Chrome and Edge send your microphone audio to Google’s or Microsoft’s servers for recognition — that is how the browser feature works. This site does not record or store the audio, and the transcript stays in your browser, but avoid dictating confidential information.

Frequently asked questions

Is this speech to text free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no time limit; recognition is provided by your browser.

Why does it say my browser is not supported?

Your browser doesn’t provide the Web Speech recognition API. Open the page in Chrome or Edge on a computer or an Android phone.

Why did it stop or show a microphone error?

Usually the microphone permission was blocked. Click the lock icon in the address bar, allow the microphone and try again. A connection error means the browser couldn’t reach its recognition service.

Can I transcribe an audio file?

No. The tool listens to your microphone live; it does not upload or process recorded audio files.

Does it work offline?

Generally no. Chrome and Edge use an online recognition service, so you need an internet connection.
