Rising Sign Calculator

Find your rising sign (ascendant) from your date, time and place of birth — along with your Sun sign, Moon sign and Midheaven.

Rising sign (Ascendant)—
Sun sign—
Moon sign—
Midheaven (MC)—
Birth time in UTC
Local sidereal time

The rising sign changes roughly every 2 hours, so enter your birth time as precisely as you can (e.g. from your birth certificate). Daylight saving time is applied automatically from the time zone’s history.

Tropical zodiac; local sidereal time and the obliquity of the ecliptic use standard astronomical formulas. The Moon position is approximate (±0.1°).

How to use

  1. 1Enter your date of birth and local time of birth as precisely as you can.

What is a rising sign?

In Western astrology, the rising sign or ascendant is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the moment and place of your birth. Astrologers associate it with first impressions and outward style, while the Sun sign is linked to core identity and the Moon sign to emotions. Astrology is not a science and has no proven predictive power — this calculator is for entertainment and curiosity.

Why birth time and place matter

The ascendant moves through all twelve signs in about 24 hours, so it changes roughly every two hours — faster for some signs than others. A difference of a few minutes can change the result near a sign boundary, and the tool warns you when that is the case. The time on a birth certificate is the best source. Daylight saving time is applied automatically from the time zone’s history, so enter the clock time as it was recorded. Above about 66° latitude the calculation becomes unreliable.

How it is calculated

The tool converts your local birth time to UTC, computes the local sidereal time and the obliquity of the ecliptic with standard astronomical formulas, and derives the ascendant and Midheaven in the tropical zodiac used by most Western astrologers. The Sun sign comes from the Sun’s longitude on your birth date and time, and the Moon sign from an approximate lunar position (about ±0.1°). Results were checked against published charts. Everything is calculated in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my rising sign?

Enter your birth date, exact birth time and birth city. The calculator shows the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at that moment.

Can I find my rising sign without a birth time?

Not reliably. The ascendant changes about every two hours, so without a birth time it could be almost any sign.

What is the difference between Sun, Moon and rising signs?

The Sun sign depends on your birth date, the Moon sign on where the Moon was, and the rising sign on the exact time and place of birth.

Is this sidereal (Vedic) or tropical?

Tropical, as used in Western astrology. Vedic (sidereal) astrology usually gives a sign about one earlier.
