Image to Text (OCR)

Pull editable text out of screenshots, photos and scanned pages — recognition runs on your own device.

Tip: sharp, straight, high-resolution images give the best results.

This tool runs entirely in your browser; your data is never sent to a server.

How to use

  1. 1Drop an image, choose a file or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V.
  2. 2Pick the language of the text (English is preselected).
  3. 3Wait for the progress bar to finish.
  4. 4Edit the recognised text, then copy it or download it as a .txt file.

OCR that runs in your browser

Text recognition uses Tesseract, a widely used open-source OCR engine, compiled to run inside the browser (tesseract.js). The engine and the language data are downloaded the first time you use the tool; after that your images are processed locally and never uploaded. Recognition may take a few seconds on older phones.

Getting the best results

OCR works best on sharp, high-contrast images with printed text: screenshots, scanned documents and straight-on photos of pages. Crop away backgrounds, avoid shadows and blur, and make sure the text is not too small. Handwriting, stylised fonts and text on busy backgrounds are recognised much less reliably, so always proofread the result in the editable box before using it.

Choose the right language

Selecting the correct language matters: it tells the engine which characters and words to expect, which noticeably improves accuracy for accented letters (ä, ß, ñ, ç) and is required for non-Latin scripts like Arabic and Cyrillic. Supported languages are English, German, Spanish, Turkish, Arabic and Russian.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded?

No. After the OCR engine has loaded, all recognition happens locally in your browser.

Can I paste a screenshot?

Yes. Copy a screenshot to your clipboard and press Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on Mac) on this page.

Does it recognise handwriting?

Only to a limited extent. The engine is designed for printed text; clear block capitals work better than cursive.

Can I convert a PDF to text?

The tool reads images. For a scanned PDF, save or screenshot the pages as images first.
