How it works
The tool uses the speechSynthesis interface of the Web Speech API, which every modern browser provides. Your text is split into sentences — very long ones are cut at a comma or space around 220 characters — and spoken one after another, so pausing and highlighting stay in sync and long documents don’t hit the length limits some speech engines have. The voice list is grouped by language and shows exactly what your browser and operating system offer; Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and ChromeOS all ship different voices.
Local voices vs. online voices
Voices marked “online” — such as the Google voices in Chrome or Microsoft’s online natural voices in Edge — are synthesized on the provider’s servers, so the text is sent to them. All other voices run entirely on your device. If you are listening to something confidential, choose a voice without the “online” label. You can add more offline voices in your system settings: on Windows under Settings → Time & language → Speech, on macOS under System Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content.
Why there is no MP3 download
The browser speech API plays audio straight to your speakers and never hands the page an audio file, so no web tool built on these voices can honestly offer an MP3. If you need a file, record your system audio while the text plays, or use a text-to-speech service that renders audio on a server.
Frequently asked questions
Is this text to speech free?
Yes, with no character limit and no sign-up. It uses the voices already available in your browser or operating system.
Why can’t I see any voices?
Some browsers load voices a moment after the page opens, so wait a second. If the list stays empty, no speech voices are installed — add one in your system settings or try Chrome or Edge.
Which browser has the best voices?
Edge offers Microsoft’s natural online voices, Chrome offers Google voices for many languages, and Safari uses the high-quality voices built into macOS and iOS. Quality varies by language.
Can I save the audio as an MP3?
No. The browser speech API does not return audio data. Use a screen or audio recorder if you need a file.
