Webcam Test

Check that your camera works and see the real resolution, frame rate and brightness it delivers — without installing anything.

Press the button and allow camera access in your browser.

—Delivered resolution
—Frame rate (FPS)
—Aspect ratio
—Brightness

If the camera can’t deliver the requested resolution, the browser picks the closest one; the values shown here are what the camera actually sends.

Privacy: the video is shown only in your browser; no frame is recorded or sent to any server. A photo is saved to your device only when you download it.

This tool runs entirely in your browser; your data is never sent to a server.

How to use

  1. 1Press “Test camera” and allow camera access when the browser asks.
  2. 2Choose a camera and, optionally, a requested resolution from 640×480 up to 4K.
  3. 3Check the live preview and the delivered resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio and brightness.
  4. 4Toggle the mirror view or take a photo and download it as a PNG.

What the webcam test measures

The tool opens your camera with getUserMedia and reads the settings of the live video track, so the numbers are what the camera actually sends, not what it advertises: resolution, frame rate (FPS) and aspect ratio. You can request 640×480, 1280×720 (720p), 1920×1080 (1080p), 2560×1440 or 3840×2160 (4K); if the camera can’t deliver that, the browser picks the closest mode. A brightness indicator warns when the picture is too dark or too bright.

Why your webcam looks worse in calls

Many laptop webcams deliver 720p at best, and drop the frame rate in low light to collect more light per frame. Video-call apps also scale the stream down to save bandwidth. If the image is grainy or choppy, face a window or a lamp rather than sitting with a bright window behind you, clean the lens and close other apps using the camera. The mirror view only affects the preview here — others normally see you unmirrored.

Fixing “camera not found” or “in use”

Check that the privacy shutter or keyboard camera key is open, and that your browser has camera permission (on Windows: Settings → Privacy & security → Camera; on macOS: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera). Only one app can usually use the camera at a time, so close Zoom, Teams or Skype before testing. Camera access requires a secure (HTTPS) page.

Frequently asked questions

Is the video recorded or sent anywhere?

No. The preview is shown only in your browser; no frame is recorded or uploaded. A photo is saved only when you download the snapshot yourself.

Why is the frame rate lower than 30 FPS?

Many webcams lower the frame rate automatically in dim light to brighten the picture. Add more light in front of you and the FPS usually rises.

How do I find my webcam’s maximum resolution?

Pick the highest requested resolution, such as 1920×1080 or 3840×2160. The delivered resolution shows the closest mode your camera actually supports.

Can I test an external USB webcam or a phone used as a webcam?

Yes. Connect it, then choose it from the camera list. Any camera your browser can see will appear there.
