Fraction ↔ decimal converter & simplifier

This tool runs entirely in your browser; your data is never sent to a server.

    How to use

    1. 1Enter your fractions or mixed numbers, e.g. 3/4 or 1 2/3.
    2. 2Choose the operation: +, −, × or ÷ (add more fractions if you need them).
    3. 3Read the simplified result as a fraction, mixed number and decimal.
    4. 4Follow the step-by-step working, or use the converter and simplifier below.

    Adding and subtracting fractions

Fractions can only be added or subtracted once they share a denominator. The calculator finds the lowest common denominator (LCD), rewrites each fraction over it and then combines the numerators: 1/4 + 1/6 → 3/12 + 2/12 = 5/12. Mixed numbers are first turned into improper fractions (1 2/3 = 5/3), and the result is simplified by dividing top and bottom by their greatest common divisor.

    Multiplying and dividing fractions

To multiply, multiply the numerators and the denominators: 2/3 × 3/4 = 6/12 = 1/2. To divide, multiply by the reciprocal of the second fraction (“keep, change, flip”): 2/3 ÷ 4/5 = 2/3 × 5/4 = 10/12 = 5/6. The step-by-step view shows each of these stages, which makes it useful for checking homework.

    Fractions, decimals and simplifying

The converter turns a fraction into a decimal (3/8 = 0.375) and a terminating decimal back into a fraction (0.375 = 3/8). The simplifier reduces any fraction to its lowest terms, e.g. 18/24 = 3/4. Recurring decimals such as 0.333… are shown rounded, since their exact value is a fraction (1/3).

    Frequently asked questions

How do I enter a mixed number?

Type the whole number, a space and the fraction, e.g. 2 1/2. It is converted to 5/2 before calculating.

What is the lowest common denominator?

The smallest number that all denominators divide into. For 1/4 and 1/6 it is 12, the least common multiple of 4 and 6.

How do I simplify a fraction?

Divide the numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor. For 18/24 the GCD is 6, giving 3/4.

Can I calculate with more than two fractions?

Yes, you can add further fractions to the calculation.
